Long-Term Evolution Machine Type Communication (LTE-MTC or LTE-M) is a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technology standard developed by 3GPP for machine-to-machine and IoTInternet of Things applications.
LTE-M competes with NB-IoTInternet of Things, and offers a comparatively higher data rate, at the cost of requiring more bandwidth. LTE-M also supports seamless handover between cells, unlike NB-IoTInternet of Things, which must re-register with the new base station.
Unlike NB-IoTInternet of Things, LTE-M cannot fit into guard bands. It is often deployed inband with traditional LTE service, typically utilizing 1.4 MHzMegaHertz (MHz) 10^6 Hz (6 PRBs) of a low band LTE carrier.
